Lunch specials $15 — Orleans, Monday to Friday, 11am to 3pm

A taste of tradition

Yemen Gate is your gateway to Yemeni culture and history through its authentic culinary heritage. Lamb goes into the oven at the start of the day and comes out as haneeth; rice is layered with the same spice a Yemeni grandmother would use; the tea is Adani, black with milk and cardamom.

We honour tradition with every dish, using locally sourced ingredients and time-honoured techniques.

Having lived in the Middle East for 20 years, I can confidently vouch for Yemen Gate as one of the most authentic Yemeni-style mandi spots in Ottawa.

Questions

Is everything halal?

Yes. The restaurant is family-owned and 100% halal, and every dish is made with halal ingredients.

What is mandi, and how is it different from haneeth?

Both are Yemeni. Mandi is meat cooked over spiced rice so the fat drips down through it. Haneeth is slow-roasted separately until it falls off the bone, then served over the rice.

Can I order a whole lamb for an event?

Yes — quarter, half or whole, over mandi rice. Order ahead; see the catering page.
